Friday Fill-in and Musings on Blog Traffic

Posted by hubman38 on November 13, 2009

First, the musings…

I was reading a piece on The Daily Beast about Glenn Beck losing a lawsuit he brought against a parody website called DidGlennBeckRapeandMurderAYoungGirlin1990.  Rather than repeat the story, click here for the Daily Beast article and here for the parody site.  I’ll leave the irony of a “one-world government” conspiracy theorist using the World Intellectual Property Organization court [part of the United Nations] to file his claim for another day…

Anywho, the point of all this comes back to this quote from the article: “The site, which launched at the beginning of September, took off quickly, with 120,000 hits in its first 24 hours”

Excuse me? 120,000 hits in 24 hours?  How the fuck does that happen?

It’s taken me 10+ months to get to just shy of 150,000 hits.  While I’ve come close, I’ve never had 1000 hits in a day.

Don’t get me wrong, I understand that there is a world of difference between a blog mocking a very well known political commentator and my humble little corner of the blogosphere, so I realize we’re comparing apples and beer.  But I do seriously wonder how that sort of growth happens.  That must be some amazing word-of-mouth.

Whatever I’m doing to try to grow my blog audience [no, that's not why I blog but yes, it would be nice], clearly I’m doing something wrong…

And…here we go!

1. The last band I saw live was Godsmack in December 2006.
2. What I look forward to most on Thanksgiving is when it’s over and I can escape from hell Long Island.  Seriously, I love the craziness of Turkey Day at my in-laws. (if you don’t celebrate thanksgiving, insert your favorite holiday)
3. My Christmas/holiday shopping is not even started yet.
4. Thoughts of Veronica, a new digital SLR, and an upcoming rendezvous (not necessarily in that order) fill my head.
5. I wish I could wear what I want to work some days, instead of a uniform.
6. Bagpipes sometimes sound God-awful, but are perfect for the occasion other times.
7. And as for the weekend, tonight I’m looking forward to picture taking with Veronica once the kids are asleep, tomorrow my plans include going to the gym, working on some blog posts, reading blogs for the first edition of e[lust], and a swingers meet-and-greet party and Sunday, I want to recover and watch football!

I turn 40 in January and am hoping for one as a combined Christmas and birthday gift, so I’ve been checking them out. Since Veronica would have no idea what to get me and will hopefully just get me what I suggest…

    also, hate wordpress LOL

  3. You know I appreciate you making the trip to Long Island to spend the day with some mildly psychotic Italians with no volume control who feel the need to constantly feed you since someone as tall as you needs way more to eat than the rest of us.

I do know that mom promised to have chocolate cream pie, just for you.

Maybe now that you mentioned the article, you’ll get a very large number of hits in the next 24 hours or so. It’ll be interesting to see.

  6. Hope the picture taking went well. :)

Increasing traffic even in the blogging world works very much the same as traditional SEO for informational and ecommerce websites. It is a complicated function of content, keywords within that content, links TO your site/blog, links FROM your site/blog and where your traffic comes from and goes to when they leave. There are many things you can actively do to increase traffic, but if it really is not a main priority to you, it is something you can just simply integrate over time instead of saying “I want ‘x’ traffic within the next week or so”….

You likely knew all of that anyway, but in case you didn’t just thought I’d leave my 2 cents!! Keep blogging, I enjoy reading.

Honey, you still get a whole hell of a lot more hits than I do.

Stats are intriguing though…who’s looking at the blog, where are they from…who gets more stats than this blog and why?

I wished statcounter was more useful with wordpress.

I KNEW someone would say “you get more hits than I do”! And yet there are people who are laughing at the little audience I attract.

I have the same issues with WordPress’ built-in statcounter.

  11. I have been trying to follow your blog but took me a while to do so. I have had to bookmark it since it is a .com blog instead of it just showing up on my dashboard list from my blog. Suffice to say every time I want to read your blog, I would have to access it through my bookmarks, and sometimes I forget to do that. Just sayin’

  12. Are you using all the right keywords? Have you built a Google sitemap? I get around 400 – 600 hits a day – Depending on the topic. It could actually happen that that many are hitting the site in that time – the title of the blog contains good keywords. I Googled your site and it is right there on the list – first page so that is good, they are recognizing it. As for *stat counter* use the actual site one, not WordPress. It’s more accurate and gives you more. (http://www.statcounter.com/)

And if you add an RSS feed to your blog – anyone can follow you. From anysite in any reader.

The one awesome thing about WordPress is all the plugins that you can use. I can recommend some great ones if you need it?
